The cozy life of Joan Collins' 5th husband: 32-year gap in age and a sweet gesture in the morning
Despite being one of the last living stars of Hollywood's Golden Age, Dame Joan Collins has shown no sign of slowing down. Britain's most famous actress and author may have been out of Dynasty for many years, but she still manages to keep up with her work and social life to a degree that rivals her portrayal of Alexis Colby in the show.
At the age of 90, Dame Joan is marking the release of her 19th novel, 'behind the shoulder pads', which will be accompanied by a UK tour of her latest one-woman show. Last year, she celebrated her 20th wedding anniversary with her 58-year-old husband Percy Gibson, who she describes in her memoir as 'the best lover I ever had'.
Dame Joan opened up to the Daily Mirror about her relationship for the first time in years after years of being teased about her ‘toy boy’ hubby.
At 32 years old, Percy is Dame Joan’s dream partner and proof that sometimes it’s not always third – but sometimes fifth – time lucky. “People tell me I’m lucky and he’s looking great right now!” she said. “It’s fifth time lucky! I’ve felt that for years! He’s a great, kind, really good guy. He’s my – what’s he always say? – my partner, yes, but also my best friend and extremely handsome. He just keeps getting better and better.”
The couple first met in 2000, when they had dinner together on the road while Dame Joan was 67 years old and touring America, and Percy, 36, was her divorced producer from Peru and Scotland. She had been previously married to actor Robin Hurlston, a messy marriage that ended in divorce but one worth enduring. “Percy and I got to know each other really well at first,” she said. “We had a connection, we really knew each other.” In 2002, they married at London’s Claridge’s. In their wedding speech, Percy said, “Joan is my companion, my friend, my confidante, my fearless leader, my most loyal supporter and my best friend.”
Dame Joan spoke candidly about the secret to their happy marriage. She said, "Every morning he would bring me a cup of coffee in bed before he went for a run while I was reading all the papers - my mum used to do the Daily Mirror - and he would leave little messages under the kettle. Separate bathrooms are so important! We are very fortunate, I know not everyone can be. He has his own office space and I have my own. I will spend time in my office writing or talking to my friends. He will be working, taking care of our three properties and then we will do something. Like any married couple, we have our moments. We do sometimes argue, but it's usually when we are working together."
Although they are 30 years apart, Percy’s Peruvian background gives him a fresh perspective on the age difference. “He didn’t care about the age difference at all,” said Dame Joan. “In Peru, a woman is pretty if she’s pretty. They don’t think about it.” She added that the couple argue occasionally but are happily in love, whether it’s working together on her tour or catching up on an old Dynasty box set to see her as the amazing Alexis on TV. “Percy will keep asking me what happens to Blake and Alexis, and I don’t know! I can understand why it was so popular,” added Dame Joan.
