Game Recap: Eagles 38, Commanders 31

 


LANDOVER, Md. – The Eagles and Washington Commanders will win the season series  in front of a loud crowd at FedEx Field. 
 Jalen Hurts threw  four touchdowns, AJ Brown caught two and Reed Blankenship's interception changed the momentum of the game as Philadelphia won 38-31. 
 
 “It wasn’t pretty at all, but we’re in the National Football League and it’s hard to win games”; said coach Nick Sirianni.“We went away and won in the end. We still have a lot  to do to be able to continue climbing. 
 
 Find out how the game went: 
 First Quarter 
 
 The Commanders struck first. Sam Howell found Terry McLaurin for a 26-yard score.  Brian Robinson Jr.'s 29-yard runcreate a touchdown. The trip to Washington lasted just three songs and lasted less than a minute. (Commanders 7 – Eagles 0) 
 GOAL ON THE FIELD! Jake Elliott was good from 51 yards! An 11-play, 42-yard drive failed in Washington territory, forcing the Eagles to settle for a three-pointer.Jalen Hurts made big passes to A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith to push the offense up the field. (Commanders 7 - Eagles 3) 
 Second Quarter 
 
 The Commanders were rolling. Howell found Jahan Dotson across the middle for a wide-open score.The 21-yard touchdown pass came just two plays after a personal foul penalty forced the Commanders back to their own 30-yard line. (Commanders 14 - Eagles 3) 
 With the Eagles at Washington's 4-yard line, Kenneth Gainwell stumbled while returning the ball  to the Commanders. Kamren Curl released the ball  and Phidarian Mathis recovered. AJBrown had 57 receiving yards. 
 DEFENSE! On fourth-and-1 from Philadelphia's 35-yard line, James Bradberry made an excellent play to intercept a pass intended for McLaurin. 
 TOUCH! My GodJ Brown! The receiver completed a one-handed 16-yard touchdown run into the front corner of the end zone. In just 1:14 minutes, the Eagles took the field after big plays from Brown, Gainwell and DeVonta Smith. (Commanders 14 – Eagles 10) 
 “I literally  did this during practice on Friday”; – said Marrone.“It was the same corner and everything.”
The commanders covered the ground in 33 seconds to get within firing range. Joey Slye's field goal attempt was dismissed after a false start penalty, but that didn't matter as he made a three-point field goal from 61 yards with one second left. It was the longest field goal in Washington history and the longest of Slye's career. (Commanders 17 - Eagles 10) 
 Third Quarter 
 
 With the Eagles at the Washington one-yard line, Hurts found a brotherly shove and gave the ball back to the Commanders. It was the second time  the Eagles' offense committed a foul inside their opponent's 5-yard line.Another near touchdown for Brown came with a fumble on the next play. 
 “The defense helped us,” Brown said. “We still have to clean up these little things. We're still climbing and still working. 
 Britain Covey returned a punt  25 yards to the Philadelphia 49-yard line, giving the Eagles excellent field position.
 TOUCH! Another bronze! Another incredible catch from Brown and an incredible throw from Hurts. Brown entered the field and received the ball with two defenders, then crossed the goal line and scored his second goal of the day. Smith's 17-yard catch on fourth-and-4 gave Philadelphia the lead.(Eagles 17 - Commanders 17) 
 Fourth Quarter 
 
 The Commanders scored on their first drive of the fourth quarter. Logan Thomas caught a pass from Howell on third down and passed Reed Blankenship on a slant route. (Commanders 24 - Eagles 17) 
 With a 16-yard catch in the fourth quarter, Brown became the first player in NFL history to rush for 125 yards or more in six consecutive games. Last week he was tied with Calvin Johnson  five times in a row at 125+. 
 “I’m still working,” Brown said.“I think there will come a time when I’ll sit down and say, ‘Do it, A.J.’” but that’s not all. We have a big game coming up against Dallas. We have to go to work." 
 "He's doing some really impressive things," Hurts said. "He plays at a very high level, he is consistent." As a friend, I know what his mentality is and where he comes from. It's no surprise how he works, what he does in the offseason,  his mentality and  why. I'm proud of him as a friend and as a quarterback."
LANDING! Hurts found a wide-open Smith at the other end of the field, who ran into the end zone for a 38-yard touchdown. The 3:16 pace was a quick response to the Commanders' recent result. (Eagles 24 – Commanders 24) 
 “Jalen played very well”; Sirianni said. “I think  you can see how good he is  in the pocket.I thought he turned off the lights. 
 interceptions! All aboard  Blankenship! Reed caught Howell's pass through the air for the first time since his third week of interceptions. Washington's late-game overtime penalty put the Eagles at the Washington 7-yard line.
 “We were just waiting for the opportunity and the opportunity came to us,” Blankenship said. “You have to  play with the ball, especially in the crucial moments of the game.” 
 TOUCH! There are! Julio Jones scored his first touchdown as an Eagle.Hurts hit the veteran  receiver in the middle of the end zone with his fourth touchdown pass of the game. The score dropped just two plays after Blankenship's interception. (Eagles 31 – Commanders 24) 
 “That is the art we practiced”; said Jones. “It couldn't have been put any better. They did exactly what they showed in the video and we executed them.”“
 DEFENSE! The Commanders failed to move up to fourth place in midfield. Howell's consecutive passes  were mediocre and McLaurin missed them too. 
 SAC! The next!Haason Reddick sacked Howell on fourth down and released the ball. The ball was recovered by Washington, but  it didn't matter on fourth down. The Eagles won on downs again,  this time in the red zone. 
 “I’ll play football until the time runs out”; Reddick said. “It is the will, it is the desire and it is the determination.“
 TOUCH! D’Andre Swift found the end zone with a brotherly shove fake, giving the Eagles a two-point lead. The Philadelphia native finished the game with 57 yards rushing  and a touchdown after  just three yards  the first time around. ( Eagles 38 – Commanders 24) 
 “It looked like it was going to be a tough, hard-fought game. We knew it,” Quick said.“These guys are doing a great job, especially on defense.” 
 The Commanders moved quickly down the field to respond to Swift's touchdown after just four plays and 72 yards. Howell found Jameson Crowder in the corner of the end zone, where the receiver made an impressive diving dive. (Eagles 38 - Commanders 31) 
 The Eagles recovered an onside kick and ended the game with a knee strike.
